Many Android users have felt frustrated by the lack of a true universal search tool. It’s surprising that, despite Google’s leadership in the search market, Android doesn’t provide a system-wide search feature. This feature would allow users to search contacts, messages, installed apps, shortcuts, and much more.

Why Android Needs a Better Search Functionality

Android has advanced features and AI integration, yet it lacks a native tool similar to Spotlight found on other platforms. On Pixel phones, the Pixel Launcher offers some search functionality. This allows users to search installed apps, shortcuts, and on-device data. However, non-Pixel devices may not have the same level of unified search capability.

The Rise and Fall of Sesame Search

For years, Sesame Search was my go-to app for this purpose. It provided a universal search experience that Android users truly needed. Sesame could search through installed apps, contacts, messages, notes, and even services like Spotify and Google Maps. Unfortunately, Sesame was acquired by Branch, an analytics company, leading to its decline. The last update came in November 2022, which only supported Android 11 and Android 12.

Introducing Pixel Search as an Alternative

When Sesame began to falter, I turned to Pixel Search. This app emerged in 2023 as a promising alternative, bringing similar search capabilities to all Android devices, and it was free to use. While it didn’t have as many features as Sesame, it quickly became my first app to install on new Android devices.

Challenges with Pixel Search

Sadly, the developer abandoned Pixel Search after a few months. As I continued to use it, I noticed the experience was deteriorating. Bugs were becoming more frequent, and the absence of features like fuzzy search was disappointing.

A Comeback for Pixel Search

Recently, there was a surprising turnaround. Earlier this month, the developer began updating Pixel Search again after almost two years. This new version, Pixel Search 2.0, introduced a fresh design and new customization options for widgets. The app now supports custom search engines and URLs, enhancing its functionality.

New Features in Pixel Search

• Contextual popups: When searching for a contact or address, a long-press on the result provides immediate actions like calling or navigating.
• Upgraded widget: The home screen widget can now function as a calculator, making it easier to perform quick calculations.
• Fuzzy search support: The latest version includes fuzzy search, which helps find terms even when they are misspelled.

How Pixel Search Improves Daily Tasks

Using Pixel Search has saved me countless taps during my daily tasks. For instance, if I want to start a WhatsApp conversation, I can simply type the contact’s name and tap the WhatsApp icon. This is much faster than navigating through the app to find the contact. Similarly, if I need directions to a café, I just type its name in Pixel Search and trigger a Google Maps search directly.

Customization and User Experience

Almost every aspect of Pixel Search is customizable. Users can adjust the number of web results displayed, set default apps for different file types, and even modify the app’s background transparency. You can also change the search bar’s position and add a search tile to the Quick Settings panel for quick access.

Why Pixel Search is Essential for Android Users

Despite its earlier challenges, Pixel Search has become an essential tool for me. It’s surprising that such a feature-rich app remains completely free. While Google is shifting its Pixel Launcher towards a search experience powered by the Google app, this change seems like a downgrade. The new Google app doesn’t search through device settings or app shortcuts as effectively as before.

Thankfully, Pixel Search offers a way for users to regain the efficient search experience that seems to be fading. It’s a powerful tool that enhances productivity and simplifies the Android experience. For anyone using Android, I can’t imagine managing without it.
