Carnival season is here! It officially starts on January 5, and many people are ready to celebrate. The excitement is building up as folks prepare for the fun festivities ahead.

If you walk into Tommey’s Mardi Gras store in Mobile, you might feel like you entered a wonderland of Mardi Gras. The store is filled with colorful decorations and all sorts of festive items.

Anna Grace Coleman, a local customer, shared her love for the store. “My favorite things are definitely the wide variety of beads,” she said. “All the decorations. I just love it so much, and all the little toys!”

Gathering Supplies for Mardi Gras

As the owner, Stephen Toomey, mentioned, “People are gearing up for Mardi Gras.” The store has everything you might need, from hats and shoes to a whole lot of necklaces.

People are not just shopping for party supplies though. Some are on the hunt for special treats.

MoonPies: A Sweet Mardi Gras Tradition

One popular item is the Peach Cobbler MoonPie. Desiree Bodin-Banegas traveled three and a half hours from Louisiana just to find them at Toomey’s. “It’s the only place I could get the peach MoonPies,” she laughed.

She stocked up with 10 cases! “I have peach, mint, banana, coconut, blueberry, and strawberry,” she said excitedly.

Preparing for Fat Tuesday

This year, Fat Tuesday falls on February 17. As the date approaches, everyone seems eager to get into the festive spirit. Anna Grace Coleman expressed a common concern, saying, “I wish it was a little bit later because I don’t want to be freezing cold. But it’s not that bad.”
