Search for Lost Pets in Roanoke After Van Crash

Search Continues for Lost Pets in Roanoke Area After Crash

In Roanoke, Virginia, a rescue transport van crash on I-81 has led to the escape of three cats and two dogs. As the community rallies to find them, the search remains ongoing.

Community Efforts to Find the Escaped Pets

As of Monday, only one dog has been found. Residents like Christy Gorth are actively involved in the search for the missing pets. Gorth mentions, “We originally saw her running near the interstate, and she had ran into the median, so we just had to wait her out.” The search team has received several sightings in neighborhoods near I-81.

Challenges in Locating the Escaped Dog

The second dog is proving to be a challenge to catch. She has a strong flight response and runs away whenever someone tries to rescue her. Community member Hayden Van Buren, who runs BackRidge Drone Services, is using drones to monitor her from above while others attempt to catch her on the ground. Van Buren stated, “They actually have some large box traps. My goal is to try and locate her and figure out where she’s laying.”

Search for the Missing Cats

While the dog search continues, there have been no sightings of the three missing cats. Van Buren explained that cats are harder to spot because they can easily hide under buildings. “If they’re out in the open somewhere, I’ll be able to see them, but if they’re under some kind of structure, I won’t,” he added.

Using Technology to Aid the Search

Van Buren encourages residents to check their overnight Ring camera footage. “I think that’s the best time when they’re going to start moving, when everything calms down,” he said. Animals often feel safer at night when traffic is lighter.

Helping the Search Efforts

The community is coming together to support the search efforts. Gorth hopes that people will donate money to help fund Van Buren’s drone services. “They have so many bills and other things that they have to take care of,” she said. Gorth is trying to alleviate some of the financial burdens on rescue organizations involved.
