Major Update to Google’s Now Playing App Released
Google’s Now Playing App Gets a Major Update
This October marks nine years since Google released one of its most beloved features: Now Playing. This feature can automatically identify songs playing around you. I still remember the first time it worked on my Pixel 2 XL; it felt like magic. Even today, it’s one of the main reasons I choose a Pixel phone over other Android devices.
The Evolution of Now Playing
Over the years, Google has made some small tweaks to Now Playing, but the basic experience has stayed pretty much the same. Recently, though, Google launched the new Now Playing app, which is the biggest update yet. I’ve spent a whole day using this new app on my Pixel, and as a longtime fan, I can say it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for.
What’s New in Now Playing?
First off, it’s important to note that Google hasn’t changed how Now Playing works. The app still runs quietly in the background and identifies songs without you having to do anything. What’s different is how it looks. The display on your lock screen or always-on display shows songs more clearly. The text is larger and easier to read. When you tap on a song, it expands to show the album cover and offers shortcuts to favorite the song or play it in your favorite music app.
Improved User Experience
In the older version, tapping a song would take you to the Now Playing section in the Settings app. Now, you can see everything directly on your lock screen, which is a huge improvement.
Now Playing as a Standalone App
Another big change is that Now Playing is no longer just a setting. It now has its own dedicated app. You can still check your history and liked songs, and change your preferred music provider. All the features are the same but presented in a much nicer way. The new app uses Material 3 Expressive design, which looks fantastic.
Manual Song Identification
If you want to identify a song manually, the new app makes it easy. Just open it up and tap the large circle button in the middle of the screen. Before, you could do this through the Quick Settings, but now everything is in one place, making it more convenient.
Why This Update Matters
Although Google hasn’t added any brand-new features with this update, it has made the existing ones easier to access and nicer to look at. Now Playing has always felt like a unique feature that only Google could create. Over the years, no other smartphone brand has copied it, proving its originality.
Future of Now Playing
The new app enhances the overall experience of using Now Playing and reassures users that Google is committed to keeping it around. In recent years, Now Playing seemed to be neglected, so seeing this attention is a positive sign for its future. This new app gives me confidence that Now Playing is here to stay.
Getting the New Now Playing App
If you haven’t downloaded the new Now Playing app yet, go to the Google Play Store. Search for “Now Playing,” and you should find the new app available for download. Give it a try; you might just love it!
