Google Home is launching an important update. This update brings new starters, conditions, and actions. With these changes, managing smart home automations is going to be much easier. Many users felt stuck with the old routines based only on time or motion. Now, there’s more flexibility and control.

New Features for Google Home Users

Anish Kattukaran, the product chief at Google Home, shared details about this update. He mentioned that the new features allow users to have greater control over their devices. For example, users can set up automations that trigger when media starts playing. Imagine your living room lights dimming to 50% as soon as your TV begins a movie or show. That’s the kind of smooth experience people want in a smart home.

Understanding New Conditions

The heart of this update is its new conditions, which act like “if” statements in your routines. You can set a routine to trigger based on the volume level. For instance, a routine could activate when the volume reaches 50. This includes checking the playback state of your media device. You can now create triggers for when a speaker is paused or when a TV is actively playing. Even if a device is buffering can be monitored!

Expanded Functionality with Smart Appliances

The new conditions also work for lighting and appliances. Users can set triggers based on light brightness. For example, “When the brightness is above 80%.” One of the most exciting features is checking smart appliances’ states. You can create conditions like when the washer is running or when the dryer has stopped. This makes life easier!

Quality-of-Life Improvements

This appliance monitoring feature is a big upgrade. For example, you can ask your smart speaker to announce when the washer has stopped. That way, you know when a cycle is done without having to check. However, it’s good to note that this feature is currently limited. Right now, it works with washers, dryers, and coffee makers. Sadly, robot vacuums and smart ovens are not yet supported.

Introducing “Then” Statements

The update also includes “then” statements in your routines. Now, you can set your security system to arm automatically. For instance, you could program it to arm at 10:00 PM every night. Some users think it would be better if there was also a disarm action included, but it’s still a positive addition.

Control Physical Devices

You can now manage physical devices like blinds. For example, you can set it up to open or close the living room blinds as part of your morning routine. If you have a robot vacuum, you can pause or resume it more easily, rather than just turning it on or off. Starting or stopping smart appliances, like remotely starting your coffee machine, is now possible too. Moreover, this update lets you control light effects on smart bulbs, but for now, it only supports stopping light effects.

Anish Kattukaran mentioned that even more actions and triggers are coming soon. Users can expect another batch of features in the next few weeks. To access these changes, make sure your Android app is updated to version 4.6.55.1. If you don’t see the changes right away, don’t worry. Google often releases updates in waves, so it may take a few days before they reach your device.
