Clean Your Android Phone by Uninstalling AICore

Cleaning Up Your Android Phone: A Look at AICore

Many Android users find themselves needing to clean up their phones from time to time. This can mean deleting unused apps and files that take up space. Recently, I decided to tackle one app that I really disliked: AICore. I had heard that it could be a problem for storage and performance, so I wanted to see what would happen if I uninstalled it.

What is AICore and Why Does It Matter?

AICore is an app found on devices with AI models, like the Gemini Nano. This app helps AI features like Summarize in Recorder, Magic Compose, and Pixel Screenshots to work properly. While it has its uses, AICore also takes up a lot of storage and can drain battery life. This is why I wanted to find out if I could live without it.

Why I Decided to Disable AICore

Before now, I was hesitant to uninstall AICore. I thought it might hurt my phone’s performance. However, after doing some research and considering my usage, I decided to go ahead and disable it. I found that I could disable the app and uninstall its updates to save space.

  • Open the Settings app on your phone.
  • Tap on Apps.
  • Find and tap on AICore.
  • Tap Disable and then the three-button menu.
  • Select Uninstall updates from the drop-down menu.

Results of Uninstalling AICore

After taking these steps, I waited a week to see how it would change my phone’s performance and storage. To be honest, I didn’t notice a big change in battery life or performance. If you’re looking to improve battery life, other methods might be better.

However, I was able to clear 7GB of data from my phone’s storage. That’s about a 5.5% increase in available space on a 128GB phone. Many users who have uninstalled AICore reported better battery life, but it’s not guaranteed.

Less Clutter and Fewer Notifications

Another benefit I noticed was a decrease in annoying AI pop-ups. Features like Magic Cue and Pixel Screenshots stopped sending me irrelevant alerts. My Pixel 10 Pro felt almost peaceful without the constant AI suggestions.

“It felt like I was in a different world where AI features didn’t exist!”

What Happens to Other AI Features?

After I disabled AICore, I checked how other AI tools on my phone were doing. Some apps, like Gemini, continued to work without issues. However, others, like Pixel Screenshots, completely stopped working. This was a bit of a surprise.

  • Pixel Journal lost its AI features but still worked fine.
  • Recorder could no longer summarize recordings.
  • The core Gemini app functioned normally since it operates in the cloud.

I had thought that I could still use AI tools if I was online, but it seems those apps are designed to only work with Gemini Nano.

Should You Uninstall AICore?

It’s usually not a good idea to uninstall system apps, as many are vital for your phone’s operation. Google hides them for a reason. However, AICore is an exception. If you don’t often use on-device AI models, disabling it can free up storage and reduce unwanted AI notifications.

Overall, if you find that you don’t use AI features much, consider giving AICore the boot for a cleaner, less cluttered phone experience.
