Starting January 1, people living in California can use a new government website to ask over 500 data brokers to delete their personal information. The New California Delete Act

In 2023, California took a big step forward. The state changed its laws to create a single website for residents. This site allows people to ask all data brokers in California to delete their personal information at once. This is a unique move in the U.S. and advocates are excited about it.

“California has the most advanced approach to data brokers of any state,” said Matt Schwartz, a policy analyst.

How to Use the Data Deletion Website

If you live in California and want to use this new tool, you first need to prove your residency. You can do this through a digital identification service. After that, just fill in some basic details like your name and date of birth. You can return later to change any information you submitted.

Even though you can start the process now, data brokers have until September to act on these deletion requests. After that, they could face fines for not complying.

Once you request deletion from data brokers, you might notice some differences. For instance, there may be fewer targeted ads online, and you might get fewer spam texts and emails from companies.

However, not everything can be deleted. Some information, like public records, is still available online and cannot be removed through this process.
