Binghamton University Launches Center for AI Responsibility and Research

Binghamton University is stepping up in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) with the new Center for AI Responsibility and Research. This center will cost around $55 million and is located in Broome County, New York. It is funded by a generous $30 million donation from Tom Secunda, an alumnus of the university, along with an additional $25 million from SUNY research funds.

The Importance of AI Responsibility

Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the significance of this center. She pointed out that AI is growing quickly and is becoming a part of many aspects of our lives. This means we need to ensure that AI technology is developed safely and responsibly for everyone in New York.

According to Hochul, “The Center for AI Responsibility and Research will be an independent arm of research that gives New Yorkers transparency and confidence that AI is being developed and deployed in ways that serve the public good.”

Key Contributions from Tom Secunda

Tom Secunda played a major role in this project. His $30 million donation is the largest in Binghamton University’s history. He had previously committed $5 million to help attract tech talent for the AI economy. Secunda, who co-founded Bloomberg LP, is now the chair of New York State’s Empire AI consortium.

“To capture those AI benefits at full scale, we also need to build trust the right way: through independent, rigorous research,” Secunda said.

Research Focus of the Center for AI Responsibility and Research

The center will focus on important issues related to AI, including its safety, security, and transparency. The goal is to ensure that AI technology truly benefits the public. This means researching how AI systems work and ensuring they are reliable for all users.

Future Plans and Community Impact

Binghamton University is on the lookout for leaders and faculty for this center. These individuals will help carry out the center’s mission and ensure that research findings are put into practice. This investment is expected to attract talent and create opportunities not just for students but for the wider community as well.

Community Reactions

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar expressed his excitement, stating, “This investment positions Binghamton University and Broome County at the forefront of cutting-edge AI research.” He thanked Governor Hochul for acknowledging the local talent and potential.

Looking Ahead at AI Research and Development

The establishment of the Center for AI Responsibility and Research is a significant step for Binghamton University and the surrounding area. With this center, the university aims to lead national efforts in responsible AI research. This will help ensure that future AI advances will strengthen communities and expand opportunities.

  • Developing ethical AI applications.
  • Creating standards for AI safety and transparency.
  • Building a talent pipeline for the AI workforce.

As part of its commitment to this initiative, Binghamton University will also rebrand itself to align more closely with the SUNY system. This move is expected to enhance recognition and support for the university’s research efforts.
