January: A Thrilling Wrestling Championship

The high school wrestling scene in Aiken County has really taken off since it started in 2016. This growth was on full display during an exciting quad match featuring Aiken High, North Augusta, South Aiken, and Gilbert. The Region 4-AAAA championship was on the line, and Aiken came out on top, winning their second consecutive region title. They continued their success in February, defeating South Aiken and North Augusta in the playoffs, ultimately reaching the state semifinals.

Aiken’s First State Championships

Aiken brought home its first individual state championships, with Bryan Davis, Jr. and Aiden Vasquez earning the honors. This was a proud moment for the program and the community.

February: Junior Golfers Shine

February welcomed the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, showcasing some of the best young golfers in the world. Among the participants were Charlie Woods, son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, and Kai Trump, granddaughter of former President Donald Trump. Charlie finished tied for 25th, while Kai faced a tough competition, ending in last place.

March: North Augusta Basketball Dominance

March is always a big month for high school basketball, especially for the North Augusta girls’ team. They made their way to Florence for the state semifinals and championship games. This year, the boys’ team joined them, both aiming for Class AAAA titles.

A Historic Win for the Girls

The girls secured their sixth state title in just nine years with a solid win over Westside, while the boys faced a tough loss in their first-ever appearance at this level.

April: RJ Felton’s Rise

April marked an important step for local athlete RJ Felton. His journey from North Augusta and Aiken high schools led him to sign with East Carolina University. After making a name for himself in college basketball, he declared for the NBA draft and signed with the Indiana Pacers, where he’s making an impact in the G League.

May: High School Golf Season Highlights

As the high school golf season wrapped up, teams prepared for region championships and state qualifiers. The Southern Cross tournament at Palmetto Golf Club celebrated its 50th anniversary, attracting top talent. Blue Ridge High School emerged as champions, with junior Dawson Szabo earning medalist honors by being the only player under par.

June: Tiger Woods Visits

In June, five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods made a notable visit to the area. He checked on the progress of The Loop at The Patch and TGR Learning Lab Augusta, which aim to inspire local youth through golf.
